I was immediately suspicious of this book when I saw that the font was a larger size than normal and the page size smaller than normal. Was the information so sparse that it needed cosmetic surgery to obscure the content? Alas, I suspect this is so. I never did get a true definition of the ECT technique although it is touted on nearly every page as being highly effective. This book keft me impoverished-in the fact that I paid for something of little value to me, in that I spent time reading it, and in that I was mystified by its point. Perhaps, it is a good technique and could have been useful in a small pamphlet's overview.

Emotional Core Therapy Robert A Moylan 9781470063269 Books Reviews

Emotional Core Therapy is the kind of book that everyone can relate and understand and is made for that very reason. The central concepts of ECT are the four fundamental feelings (joy, grief, fear, and relief) and Mr Moylan outlines and expresses the nature of these feelings in such a way that even layman, such as myself, are able to comprehend. The greatest treasure that i found in this book wasn't made aware to me while reading the book, instead it was what i experienced PRACTICING keeping a balanced emotional life day to day. Since reading this book I have been actively evaluating actions and decisions I've been making and have found a peaceful center when i do so. I have read self-awareness books before but their concepts were always too abstract or convoluted to really practice or even explain to others. That is not the case with Emotional Core Therapy. I recently explained the book, the four feelings, and how they are connected with our actions to my family and as of last week i now have a fourth family member asking to borrow my book or talk to me about it! Its opened a dialogue in my household that had never been there before and that alone is something i am incredibly grateful for. I would urge anyone who is struggling with the stress of life to give this book a chance. Robert Moylan has structured his work for people like us and the benefits are worth it.
Robert's book Emotional Core Therapy was a great read for me, as I am still a Psychology student. Easy to read, and comfortable in the fact that presenting true to life understandings of four emotional states, fear, joy, grief and relief is essential for people struggling in their everyday environment with life's troublesome issues. His ECT therapy mantra is simple and takes all of the drilled down confusion out of the way when you are trying to find the core of your problems and address them. I have referred back to this book a few times in the last couple of months as I am doing some research in Positive Psychology, and I thoroughly enjoy his renderings on emotions and how they can be categorized into phases of a journey, that can be managed into a positive way of healing. Thank you Dr. Moylan for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book!
The stories were unrealistic and not helpful at all. I am currently living in a stressful marriage and after 41 years need some help and guidance in making some hard decisions. This book offered no help or insight at all. A one star rating was even to much.
I bought this book based on all the 5-star reviews, and I was blown away by how little actual content the book has to offer. The entire book can be summed up as follows

"Identify the emotions you're experiencing and their root cause, and then take action to alleviate the problem. Seeing a therapist can help with that. Meditating and doing things you enjoy is also a good thing to do."

This advice is coupled with a very large number of stories that go something like this

"When Bob started therapy with me, he was unhappy and anxious and didn't know why. After several sessions, we discovered that his relationship with his wife was the problem. We developed ways for him to address the issue. Now, he has a stronger marriage and his anxiety went down considerably."

After that, you're asked to do an "exercise" such as "Write down 5 emotions that are similar to anger."

This is repeated over and over again, in a very patronizing and condescending manner. I'm no stranger to anxiety and depression, and I've gone to therapy and read other self-help books. I also have a degree in psychology. Robert may very well be a reasonably good therapist, but there is absolutely no reason for a book detailing his clients' success to exist - and that's really all there is to it. All the "concepts" presented could be summed up in a single page.

If you want a book that actually provides legitimate exercises to help you address your issues on your own, try "Prisoners of Belief" by Matthew McKay. It's a bit more work than just "write down 5 synonyms to anger", with a lot less repetition and fluff, but it actually works.
This book needs more. It almost seems like a Copy Kat of others research. I had to Re-Read several lines, paragraphs, chapters. I would not share this book with others in my therapy groups. Seems to bloviate and get off topic. Boring at times.
As a psychotherapist with a huge bookshelf full of psychology, counseling, and self help books, I was intensely disappointed in this book. It is the only book I have ever considered returning. I read page after page, helping to get to the true useful content, the interventions, or solid ideas or framework for "Emotional Core Therapy," only to find out that there IS NONE. I don't know how you can write this many pages about nothing, but that is what this author has done. He is giving Jerry Seinfeld a run for his money. I ordered this book based on the numerous great reviews, but in looking at them more closely I have come to believe that most of them are fake. Many of them use the same thoughts or phrases, and many mention 12 step groups... It seems as though this author thinks his book will be the next 12 steps. It will certainly not. VERY DISAPPOINTED.
